There is a new trend in buying North Shore real estate . Young singles, especially women, are among the majority of new homeowners. In fact, from 2001 and 2005 there was a 6 percent jump in female buyers.

Affordability, a closeness to entertainment and nightlife, and safe neighborhoods are what most young singles are searching for. Recent immigrants and minorities make up more of the buying market. To build equity so that a larger home can be purchased, many are starting off with condos. Finally, retirees and empty-nesters are downsizing and moving to like-minded communities. They are through with huge houses and prefer to live in smaller homes, close to friends and entertainment.

You can add value to your North Shore home by upgrading your master bedroom or deck. When the time comes to resell, certain renovations might end up costing you.

In hot, dry regions, adding a swimming pool is crucial. The idea of pool upkeep is enough to turn buyers away in a lot of the cooler regions. Families with younger children may not want to purchase a house with a pool. The new room you added on is great for a game room, but you probably didn't consider how it looks from the exterior. A poorly designed addition will not sell, particularly when it does not fit the rest of the house.

Be wary when following design trends. Just like wood paneling, above counter sinks and mahogany cabinets will date a home. Be smart and think ahead when personalizing your North Shore home.

Several North Shore home owners are living off the earth. Farm living has risen by 2 percent a year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service. Most owners aren't interested in farming for a profit.

Because farming requires so much work, it isn't for everybody. Another reason why people steer clear from moving to a farm is because of isolation. However, if you enjoy open space and are looking for a challenge, life on a farm might be for you.

A cutting edge design trend is sweeping the nation. Many residents are requesting help from a taxidermist for thoughts on how to enhance their North Shore home . Over the past couple of years, boutiques and high-end department stores have started offering stuffed animals. From peacocks and doves to deer and bobcats, taxidermy decor is all over the place.

Several people feel that decorating with stuffed animals gives modern, cold interiors a little bit of warmth. While a few love the look of a deer head mounted above the mantle, many think it's a bit disturbing. There is no telling how long this taxidermy chic look might go on so you should get your tiger while you can.

Interior design has shifted to dark from light. A lot of North Shore homeowners are trading in pale woods and bleached floors for shades of black, brown, and grey. Everything, from walls to faucets, is taking on a darker shade. To so many, these darker colors balance the daily stresses of life and create a comforting ambiance.

The drawback to dark decorating is that like any fad, it will pass. The pink bathtubs from the 60s and forest greens of the 80s certainly date a room. However, if done properly, your North Shore home can be transformed from traditional to warm and cozy.
